If I were to take the tagger's "7 fun facts" and spread it over a week, I could begin with: I write, and send, fan letters. Not often, but every now and again. I never expect any kind of reply, although I did once
get back an actual letter -- typed on a typewriter that had clearly seen hard use, and signed by hand -- from Eileen Atkins. But collecting is not the point. I enjoy articulating what I appreciate about someone else's contribution to the world, and I send them off with the old-fashioned notion that it's always nice to hear nice things about yourself from strangers. Whether the letters actually find their way to the intended recipient is also not the point, I like the feeling of contributing to well-being. Some of the letters are to everyday folks, others are to famous people. For example, I've sent 2 notes of appreciation to police officers in the local precinct, and I wrote to the now-retired Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina because I was so impressed with the elegance and artistry he brought to his work. This intermittent practice grew out of a New Year's resolution to focus on and acknowledge positive things. New Year's being a good time for reflecting and amending.[image from http://www.levenger.com/ -- where this handy little pen-holding brownie is For Sale.]

I think I could be tempted to write a fan letter that I never intended to send. Then we both get to keep our mysteries.
You're braver than I.
On an unrelated note, I wanted to write and thank you for the kind and wise comment you left on my blog regarding my brother. It was much appreciated, and generous.

Hi Meanie, Thanks for commenting on my blog. I don't have your email, so am replying here. I also thought of turning #2 upside down, but with the irregular edge it doesn't look right. I will take both to the Jan. meeting and look forward to seeing you. It's been a long time.
I'm sure that people are thrilled with your letters of appreciation. What a lovely thing to do!
Who said: "we are not alone in this world"? Not only are we not alone, some of us do similar things!
I think acknowledgement of good things is lovely. And important. Well done for writing such letters!
and today the word is: gralc
Good for you! People hardly every hear when they are doing a good job, only when they scr---mess up. My husband is a police chief and I know he would appreciate a nice letter every now and then. I know I would.
As for blogging every day, well I've kept a journal/diary for twenty five years, so doing it online comes easy for me.
