ho, ho, ho

21st century, this is Melanie. Melanie, meet the 21st century.

Actually the I'm about to join the tail-end of the 20th century. So stand by for yet another great shift in technology because by the time I finally resign myself to having to learn yet another boatload of software for yet another wholesale replacement of perfectly good equipment that has become outmoded, it's time for the new wave of latest and greatest and "must have or hang your head in au courant company" time. To wit: I have bought an Ipod shuffle. This is . . . hang on . . . my first MP3 player of any kind. I was enthusiastic about the switch from vinyl to CD, which was not so great a hardship because I didn't have a lot of vinyl, but now I do have quite a few CDs so I was reluctant to shift to whatever this thing is. But one day at work, almost everyone had a Shuffle on their desk and suddenly I Wanted One. So now I have one, and the young people are very kind about explaining it to me. "You do know that you have to charge it?" Yes. And that part wasn't baffling to the point of maddening and beyond. So far, so good. Now comes the tricky bit of actually putting music on it. I think I'll rest up.

My other new best friend is a smaller, more portable version of my first-ever digital camera. I thought ahead this time and, even though the ones that came in colors were cuter, I got the less sleek, less hip camera that uses The Same Software That I Have Already Sort-of Learned. My momma didn't raise no fool. Or maybe she did. Fooling around with the new camera I learned that my infuriating inability to get the original camera to talk to the computer and upload pictures had a very simple solution: The camera needs to be ON.

Ah, me. Sometimes I really do miss the old days.
And so to bed. That's a technology I understand completely. So far.

Enjoy your new tech toys! i don't have an iPod yet...i don't like to walk around with things stuck in my ears. Very old fashioned in wanting to be aware of my surroundings and hearing surprising things like a V of geese flying overhead. On the other hand, it would be nice to travel with one little device instead of a huge stack of CDS! Let's see some pictures of the kitties with your new camera :). Mine also needs to be turned on to talk to the camera. (You can buy an inexpensive card reader and pop the memory card out of your camera and place it in there...the pictures will appear more or less automatically on your desktop, then you can manipulate them or save them in folders to your heart's content. Saves your camera batteries and wear and tear on the little connection port on your camera; can use it anywhere without having to upload your proprietary camera software.)
