island of sanity

I took advantage of the long weekend to make some little progress on the massive sorting-purging-tidying process that is a constant in my life just now. I have achieved a small island of sanity in the necessary chaos:I had been using a table with no drawers as a desk for way too long. So I came to my senses and re-established the desk as a desk, as opposed to "a handy surface upon which to pile stuff whilst trying to decide what to do with and about everything." These drawer things are amazing -- have you heard about these? -- I can stuff a lot of my stuff in the drawers, close them, and then mirable dictu! all the stuff is still at hand but the top of the desk is relatively clear and open and suitable for use as a napping spot for Beau.

This is Beau:
Beau showed up in the yard one day, hunkered and screaming. The screaming misled me into thinking "This is one mean junkyard dog of a cat." But Beau was mostly terrified and, when translated, the screaming went something like Pleaeaeaeaeaeaeaeaeassssssssssssssssse Hellllllllllllllllllllllp Mmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Now Beau is a house cat. In this photo from the transition, you may be able to tell from his expression that he was still a little uncertain of What Just Happened. But he swiftly got into the swing of being inside and has become an indispensable member of the household.

Beau helped me revise my syllabus:
pitches in with the vacuuming
[aka hoovering, for my overseas friends]
is an enthusiastic mouser
adventurous
and a perceptive critic although his attention span is not all it might be
And now I have some serious work to do, so I will turn my back on the rest of the room -- which, quite obviously, is still in transition and have at it.
Being a virtuous sort, I did throw out that bag of shredded paper featured in the foreground. The Queen of Industry, that's me. . .

Excelsior, mes amis. Ever and always, excelsior.

What wonderful pictures of the evolved Beau! You can see from his eyes that he is content and at peace, thanks to you. And of course he now has many important tasks to perform! I wouldn't dare take a picture of my study or kitchen...the piles of papers and boxes are enormous. Congrats on clearing your desk and discovering those marvelous drawer thingies (mine are full of college notes from 30 years ago....).

This post has prompted several responses in me. One (and paramount), that I should continue to "tidy" this dreadful boar's nest. Two, that sometimes cats near keyboards are OK. Three, that I must re-write yesterday's post which was published (by keyboard cat!)before edited.
Beau is a lovely fellow. Is he friends with Halloween?

Very cute post. Beau is especially adorable, but then I am partial to cats of any kind.

I discovered drawers this weekend too! I bought a small set of them to put on top of a cabinet to hold paints, markers, rubber stamps, etc., because the drawer below the new set of drawers was full to overflowing. Nifty thing, drawers!

quiltcat, I keep hoping that by going public with the clutter I'll shame myself into finishing absolutely all of the sorting-tossing -- and never letting it get this bad again. It's much less daunting than when I started. (There's a frightening thought. . . )

dinah/mit, Beau has provided the great benefit of keeping Halloween and Patches (my other cat -- three, really, is enough) from fighting. Everyone gets along with Beau.

katie jane -- I'm telling you, this drawers thing is really going to catch on. Whoever patents those things is going to make a fortune. Just remember -- you heard it here first!

I love stray cat stories with happy endings. And drawers, as wonderful as they are need to be watched. The contents of mine breed endlessly.

Ellen,
There is that "full to overflowing" thing that happens, which is a large part of the reason I've been actively cleaning for the better part of a year.

My drawers are so full I never look in them anymore ;o)

Laughed out loud (lol, as they say) at the 'adventurous' photo!

What is it with junk - is it fitted with velcro?

not Velcro -- just weighted and freighted with sentiment of various kinds (which is so much more tenacious than Velcro). Although, being a textile person, I do have assorted lengths of actual Velcro in the hoard.

Beau has a funny face - wide, which gives him a very good expression.

I'm odd with clutter, but then I live in a very small place. I can't concentrate on "proper work" whatever that is, if the house is a mess. Dishes must be washed, bed made, even though it's behind a convenient door, pillows fluffed, bills filed etc etc. I don't know what causes it. A Puritanical streak?
