show time

Inspired by the Infinite Variety show at the Armory (March 2011), my guild is doing a red and white challenge for our annual show in May. I hadn't intended doing a button sampler when I started, but I'm always charmed when I see one, and now I have one.

12 inches high x 18 inches wide (30cm x 46cm)
Old and new buttons, embroidery floss,
variegated cotton thread, red tulle, white muslin.
Grosgrain rbbon as binding, canvas lining.
Detail
Maybe this will be the year that I finally learn how to use my digital camera. I was pretty good with my film camera but this no longer newfangled stuff remains frustrating.

Hi Melanie
Great meeting you last night at Noho, & thanks for the info on Dead Horse Bay - wow! I can't wait to go there after Fiberphiladelphia (my life is on hold until then).
Looking at your ink paintings, and the flood plain piece, I can see the relationahip to Joan Shultz's work (forgive my spelling)....I wonder if you could somehow incorporate the white buttons with the dark lines/spaces???
hope our paths cross again soon...Diane Savona

Hi Terry,
I hadn't thought of the buttons as dots, but of course they are! Thanks for the encouragement.

Diane! So great to meet you! (I do need to get out more. Maybe I'll see you at the bay one fine Spring day.) I hadn't thought about the buttons with the line work. I'm not usually so textural with what I do, but it would be interesting to explore. And maybe some overlays, since I have your permsission. . .

I love this, Melanie. You certainly put a different twist on the red & white challenge. Can't wait to see it in person.

love the red and white motif and the buttons. The whole thing is so curious, and charming and strong and precise. None of these adjectives are doing it justice. In short--- lovely. bc in katoney
